Spinnaker Croft Mid-Size Dolphin Project: An Ocean-Themed Diver With a Wider Net

Spinnaker has always been at its best when it treats the sea as more than a backdrop, just like they recently did with their Spinnaker Hass 4ocean. The brand’s dive-style watches tend to mix familiar tool-watch shapes with color, texture and a bit of storytelling, which is exactly where the Croft Mid-Size Automatic Dolphin Project Limited Edition sits.

This new Croft is a $425 ocean-themed automatic with a 40mm case and a dial that puts the collaboration front and center. It is not the quietest affordable diver under $500, but for buyers who want the conservation angle visible on the wrist, that is probably part of the appeal.

The Dolphins Are the Point

Dolphin Project is not just a nice ocean-themed name attached to the dial. Founded by Ric O’Barry on Earth Day in 1970, the organization focuses on dolphin welfare, anti-captivity work, rehabilitation, release where possible, and sanctuary projects for dolphins that cannot safely return to the wild. Its campaigns have included work around Taiji, Japan, the Solomon Islands, Indonesia and the wider captivity industry.

The dial carries the concept directly, with a textured wave-pattern surface and a group of dolphins shown mid-swim. In daylight, the watch leans into an ocean-dial look. In the dark, Swiss Super-LumiNova lights the dolphin motif, turning the collaboration into something you can actually see on the wrist.

There are three versions. Aqua Play uses a blue tone inspired by open ocean waters and is limited to 500 pieces. Dolphin Cave moves into deep green and is limited to 425 pieces. Sunrise Splash brings a warmer orange dial and is also limited to 425 pieces. That makes 1,350 watches in total, so this is limited, but not so restricted that most interested buyers will be excluded immediately.

The watch uses the Croft Mid-Size platform, which is a sensible choice for this kind of release. The case measures 40mm in stainless steel, with a 14.1mm thickness, a unidirectional bezel, screw-down crown, anti-reflective sapphire lens and 15 ATM water resistance. It also comes on a 20mm stainless steel bracelet with an extra RPET strap made from recycled plastic.

The 40mm size is important. Many affordable dive watches still sit around 42mm to 44mm, which can make them feel bigger than casual buyers want. This Spinnaker keeps the diver silhouette without pushing too hard into oversized territory. The thickness means it will still have presence, but the diameter should make it easier to live with than the larger, more tool-forward alternatives.

The RPET strap also fits the theme without needing much explanation. A recycled-plastic strap on a Dolphin Project collaboration is not a technical upgrade, but it does connect the object to the message. The stronger point is that Spinnaker includes both bracelet and strap, so the buyer does not have to choose between a steel everyday look and a lighter water-adjacent setup.

The $425 price places this watch in a busy but interesting part of the affordable automatic segment. For instance, a Seiko 5 Sports SRPD55 lists at $350, with a 42.5mm case, 4R36 automatic movement, Hardlex crystal and 10 bar water resistance. Seiko gives buyers brand familiarity and an established platform (and very good pieces, don’t get me wrong), but the Spinnaker counters with sapphire crystal, stronger rated water resistance and a more limited visual concept.

Inside is the Miyota 8215, a Japanese automatic movement. The 8215 is one of the known workhorse calibers in affordable mechanical watches, with automatic winding, hand-winding, date, hacking seconds, 21 jewels and roughly 42 hours of power reserve.

I think this Spinnaker works best when you do not overthink it. It is a Croft with a dolphin dial, a 40mm case, solid everyday specs and a clear link to Dolphin Project. It is not trying to be the toughest dive watch under $500, and it does not need to be.

The right buyer is someone who saw the dial and immediately got the point. Maybe you want a summer automatic, maybe you like ocean-themed watches, or maybe you just want something more fun than another plain black diver. The sapphire crystal, 15 ATM water resistance and included bracelet give it enough substance to be worn often, not just collected and forgotten.

I would skip it if you want one very quiet watch for everything, or if you care more about 200m water resistance and movement specs than the design. In that case, Orient and Citizen probably make more sense. But if the luminous dolphins are what caught your attention, the rest of the package does enough to back them up. At $425, it feels like a character watch that still knows how to be useful.
